For more than a decade now, China has been the largest producer of APIs in the world.
While the Department of Defense only purchases a small quantity of finished pharmaceuticals from China, about 80 percent of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) used to make drugs in the United States are said to come from China and other countries like India.
India is the largest. producer of medicine in the world and is also a large of medicine.
What we know: A study of US pharmaceutical production estimates that 54 percent of APIs used to manufacture finished pharmaceutical goods consumed in the United States are produced here; only 6 percent are sourced from China. Only 7 percent of total US API imports come from China.
Pfizer spokeswoman Kimberly Becker says “less than 2% of our active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and key materials globally are sourced from China.”

Most pharmaceuticals used in the United States are either made in nations such as China and India, or use ingredients that come from those countries. Which means much of America's collective health not only depends on diet and exercise, but also on our relations with those countries.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Johnson & Johnson is running its Tylenol manufacturing at maximum capacity in North America to meet surging demand due to the fast-spreading coronavirus outbreak, a top executive said on Thursday. The company said it is stepping up its manufacturing of the drug globally.
